Peter Jackson absolutely loved Shaun of the Dead and had it screened for the LotR cast as he was filming Lord of the Rings. Here both Peter Jackson and Cate Blanchett, who played Galadriel in LotR, make cameos in the next film of the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, Hot Fuzz.

Were they even shooting LotR in 2004?¸It would make more sense if it was during the shooting of King Kong, no?

Why am I even questioning this when the trivia is way too awesome anyway?

It is important for us to reflect on his words, because once we believe in the inevitability of war, war becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Once we are committed to war’s instrumentality in pursuit of peace, we begin the Orwellian journey to the semantic netherworld where War IS Peace, where the momentum of war overwhelms hopes for peace. And once we wrap doctrines perpetuating war in the arms of justice, we can easily legitimate the wholesale slaughter of innocents. The war against Iraq was based on lies. Wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan are based on flawed doctrines of counter-insurgency. War is often not just; sometimes it is just war. And our ability to rethink the terms of our existence, to explore the possibility of peace without war, may well determine whether we end war, or war ends us.””

- Congressman Kucinich’s Response to President Obama’s “Just War” Doctrine (via @SteveHynd)(via unburyingthelead)(via danielholter) (via robot-heart-politics)

"Think about the strangeness of today’s situation. Thirty, forty years ago, we were still debating about what the future will be: communist, fascist, capitalist, whatever. Today, nobody even debates these issues. We all silently accept global capitalism is here to stay. On the other hand, we are obsessed with cosmic catastrophes: the whole life on earth disintegrating, because of some virus, because of an asteroid hitting the earth, and so on. So the paradox is, that it’s much easier to imagine the end of all life on earth than a much more modest radical change in capitalism.”

- Slavoj Žižek (via newleft) (via unburyingthelead)

migue-e:

And, as we said before, economically, we don’t need those people. The American economy doesn’t need them. So, as long as they stay in their ghettos, and they only kill each other, we’re willing to pay a police presence to keep them out of our America. And to let them fight over scraps, which is what the drug war effectively is.”

- David Simon (Do click.

“I watch The Wire because, to paraphrase its creator, David Simon, The Wire is about what happens in a post-industrial society, one in which people are no longer needed, not in the factories, not in the service economy, not anywhere. It’s about institutions such as the police and the media, and cultures such as poverty (drugs) and failing affluence (stevedores). It’s about the fact that we live in a world that doesn’t work as well as it did, and though this world is particularly American, the failures it documents are endemic. All that, and we have no clue how to go forward.

I also watch The Wire because, like life, there are lots of characters and the connections between them are fascinating. I like the fact that resolution is hard to come by and the line between the good and the bad guys is hopelessly blurred. I like that race, class and sexuality are a given, not a soapbox – where else will you find a gay shotgun-wielding gangster (good guy), a hit man who reads The Nation and Harper’s (a not exactly bad- guy bad guy) and a drug dealer with an MBA (very bad guy).

The Wire is smart, unrepentant, interesting and it cares, really cares about society, culture, economics and art. All of which cheers me.”

Lanza’s theory of biocentrism has seven principles:[8]

What we perceive as reality is a process that involves our consciousness. An “external” reality, if it existed, would by definition have to exist in space. But this is meaningless, because space and time are not absolute realities but rather tools of the human and animal mind.

Our external and internal perceptions are inextricably intertwined. They are different sides of the same coin and cannot be divorced from one another.

The behavior of subatomic particles, indeed all particles and objects, is inextricably linked to the presence of an observer. Without the presence of a conscious observer, they at best exist in an undetermined state of probability waves.

Without consciousness, “matter” dwells in an undetermined state of probability. Any universe that could have preceded consciousness only existed in a probability state.

The structure of the universe is explainable only through biocentrism. The universe is fine-tuned for life, which makes perfect sense as life creates the universe, not the other way around. The “universe” is simply the complete spatio-temporal logic of the self.

Time does not have a real existence outside of animal-sense perception. It is the process by which we perceive changes in the universe.

Space, like time, is not an object or a thing. Space is another form of our animal understanding and does not have an independent reality. We carry space and time around with us like turtles with shells. Thus, there is no absolute self-existing matrix in which physical events occur independent of life.

(via)

They talk of being PhDs and scientists and teachers and journalists. These are smart women. What this statement really means is, “I have the privilege of not having to educate myself on this issue, so I’m going to make a cutesy disclaimer before I speak in case I say something wildly offensive.” That’s a cop out. It’s an attempt to get around owning your mistakes. And it demeans me and you.
For me, though, the winter holidays always mean one thing: A growing tide of articles guilting people about food, which crests in the few days before Christmas, and then subsides again, only to bubble up again in late October of the following year. It starts with a vague headline in the New York Times Health section, and it only goes downhill from there, getting bolder and bolder and bolder until I fear navigating to any website because I’m afraid of what I will see.

You know the sort of thing I’m talking about. “How to enjoy the holidays, without gaining weight!” “Low calorie potluck ideas” “10 rules to keep your waistline trim this holiday season!” “Eat like the stars/French and fit into your New Year’s gown!” “How to avoid the danger zones at holiday potlucks!”

These articles are aimed almost entirely at women, and they are based on a number of assumptions which irritate the pants right off me. They’re all part of this industrial complex which spends rather a lot of time telling women what to do and how to do it, and reminding them that if they don’t, they will be disgusting and unlovable and possibly fat. They’re also all aimed at reminding women that they don’t know their own bodies or their own minds, that they require guidance because they are clearly too stupid to know how to care for themselves. (And, of course, forcing your body to become thin when it does not want to be is “caring for yourself,” because being fat is a sign that you don’t take care of yourself, right?)

audd:

anyone with the nerve to kill something as precious as a baby is lowest of the low. i wouldn’t even consider them people.

I’m going to ask you to reread that statement and let it sink in what that implies before moving on.

Okay. So here’s the thing. 1 in 4 women have had an abortion. Chances are pretty good that not only do you know someone who has had an abortion, but they are probably someone you know well, someone you respect, someone you love. It could be one of your friends, your sister, your cousin, your aunt, your school teacher, your PTA president. It could even be your own mother. And don’t scoff at any of those recommendations, because statistically, it’s highly unlikely that one (or many) of these women in your life haven’t had an abortion, and the chances any of these people will ever tell you that they’ve had an abortion are pretty much non-existent, largely because they expect exactly the sort of response that you’ve just offered up as an example of all that is wrong with the pro-life movement.

If you found out your mother had had an abortion, would you call her a dumb whore who was too stupid to keep her legs closed and then tell her she wasn’t even human? Really?

Language like this only perpetuates the very convenient fantasy that the only women who get abortions are OTHER women, women we don’t like, women who aren’t like us. The truth is all kinds of women have abortions. Smart women and stupid women alike. Women who are married, women who are in committed relationships, women who have casual sex with many partners. Women who are rich, women who are poor. Women who are pro-choice, women who are “pro-life.” Women who are like me. Women who are like you.

So be careful who you start accusing of being inhuman slutty slut sluts. One day it might even be you.

Robot-Heart-Politics, I must say your many rebuttal reblogs always lift my spirits, but today in particular. Especially since some of the attacks (aimed in your general direction) often seem personal, and just plain nasty. I tend to forget, while reading and talking about, for lack of a better word, “liberal” topics, that there are groups of young women, many around my own age, who make comments like the one above. About sluts commiting murder, baby killing girls that “need to keep their legs closed.” And when I do remember that these women exist I get incredibly sad and distraught. How do you reach kids like that? Girls that sit pretty in their privilege, all the while making vicious, perhaps uneducated but not unusual comments about “other” women. And then you come. With your elequent responses, always powerful in tone but never cruel (which would be quite easy to do, I think, given the language of these comments). So thanks. For both being fabulous and reminding me that a cool and poised response is better than lashing out, or giving up.
